Responsive Management Training

RESPONSIVE MANAGEMENT TRAINING

The Responsive Management Training (RMT) program is organized for all managers who lead teams and other work groups and who are interested in ways to enhance their managerial and organizational skills and their ability to manage self-induced stress and the stress of their staff in a very challenging work environment. The RMT program is designed to produce more aligned and energized managers who are expected to:

  • Raise awareness and understanding of stress as a valid and important issue
  • Recognize how they may be contributing to the stress levels of their staff and how they could change
  • Identify specific actions and behaviors required to reduce and/or prevent the negative effects of stress in themselves and in their staff and thus become more effective managers of people
  • Maintain a sense of calmness and balance under pressure
  • Communicate more effectivelywithin their team and operate in a supportive way
  • Resolve conflicts, confrontations, or disagreements, in a constructive manner
  • Apply strategies to effectively influence, inspire and motivate people
  • Notice how others are feeling and demonstrate appropriate humility
  • Increase self-control, flexibility, adaptability and empathy

The program is based on solid, established psychological and behavioral principles, and focuses entirely on techniques for enhancing successful, productive behavior.

A variety of organizational problem-solving techniques and strategies will be introduced to assist participants in adapting a new response to stress and developing flexibility and resilience in an ever changing and uncertain work environment.

The program is individualized through the Responsive Management Profile. This self-scoring assessment helps assess the manager’s capabilities and capacity to improve their own effectiveness and efficiency.

Responsive Management Profile

The Responsive Management Profile (RMP) is exclusively available to all participants enrolled in the Responsive Management Training program. This self-scoring assessment helps assess an individual’s emotional intelligence, stress resiliency, habitual patterns of responding to stress and proactive coping skills. Particular attention is given to assessing stress-prone personalities. The profile is designed to be of use for self-responsible individuals wanting to develop optimum performance and balance in both their professional and private life.

The Responsive Management Profile includes:

•  Emotional Intelligence Assessment (EIA)                                                                                                                   The instrument measures emotional intelligence in five separate areas: self-awareness, self-management, self-motivation, social-awareness and relationship management. More than just an assessment, the individual will be provided with explanations and recommendations to help design a strategy for increasing emotional intelligence at work.

•  Personal Resiliency Profile (PRP)                                                                                                                             The PRP is designed to give participants a good estimate of their abilities to recover quickly from setbacks and successfully adapt to adversity. It measures six thinking and feeling patterns that help or hinder their ability to build resilience and it offers guidelines to protect them from negative psychological and physiological health consequences during difficult times.

•  Type A Behavior Assessment (TAB)                                                                                                                         An important aspect of managing stress relates to a behavior pattern many individuals develop in both their professional and personal lives. People with Type A behavior are typically impatient, aggressive, always in a hurry, deadline oriented, extremely ambitious and more prone to heart disease. In contrast people who manifest Type B behavior, seem to take life more slowly, work     calmly and smoothly, practice relaxation, are seldom angry or irritable and less likely to develop heart disease. This assessment is designed to evaluate whether an individual exhibits either a Type A or Type B behavior pattern. In addition, practical and effective recommendations are made to help reduce Type A behavior and reinforce Type B behavior. The results of the confidential RMP allow the participants to individualize the Responsive Management Training program to best meet their unique needs as a manager.

Responsive Management Training Program

The RMT program is generally implemented in three phases:

Phase     I         –        Introduction and Personal Assessment

Phase    II         –        Skills Acquisition and Application

Phase   III         –        Follow-up and Reinforcement

Phase I

Introduction and Personal Assessment

Managers and Directors register for the program at an Introductory Explanatory Meeting (approximately 60 – 90 minutes). The following speakers present the rationale for the program:

  • Director
  • HR representatives
  • Staff counselor
  • Program instructor

Participants receive material designed to prepare them for the core part of the program which begins approximately three weeks later. In addition, each participant receives the Responsive Management Profile and is asked to complete all three self-scoring assessments.

Option 1                                                                                                                                                                               Following completion of the assessment, each participant will receive a one-on-one, confidential 30-minute interview debrief with the program instructor to discuss individual results. During the interview participants will have an opportunity to express their concerns, expectations and hopes about the program.

Option 2                                                                                                                                                                                         Prior to the workshop, each participant completes all questionnaires and returns them to the program instructor. The data is then compiled and analysed to create a report for each participant and customize the learning activities for the workshop based on the spread of profiles.

(NOTE: All information provided to the instructor is anonymous and will be treated as confidential)

Phase II

Skills Acquisition and Application

This half-day workshop is designed to help managers increase their ability to monitor levels of stress in their staff and be equipped to take remedial action where necessary. Particular emphasis is placed on recognizing how managers may be contributing to the stress levels of their staff and how they could change.

At the core of the Responsive Management Training program are training modules, self-contained units of training materials, teaching one or more management skill or concept. Each module presents information through a variety of media, including demonstration and discussion, interactive exercises, checklists and diagrams for personal assessment.
